Eight jobs are expected to be lost with the closure of a local newspaper in Co Offaly.

Staff at the Offaly Express in Tullamore were told today that only two more editions of the weekly newspaper will be published.

The title is owned by indebted British publisher Johnston Press.

The decision to close the paper is part of a wider rationalisation across the group in Ireland and the UK.

It is believed that Johnston will continue to publish its other regional newspapers in the Midlands, including the Leinster Express and the Leinster Leader.
