Independent td Mick Wallace is expected to be allowed time to make a personal statement to the Dáil tomorrow about his tax affairs.

The whips of the various political groups agreed this evening that time should be provided, but their recommendation still has to be confirmed by the Government.

Earlier, a Dáil committee was taking the first steps in a possible investigation into the tax affairs of Independent TD Mick Wallace.

The Dáil Committee on Members' Interests met to consider a request from the Ceann Comhairle to examine the issues raised by Deputy Wallace's admission that he knowingly made a false VAT declaration to the Revenue Commissioners.

The committee has written to Deputy Wallace to establish whether the settlement was reached during his term of office, and therefore within its jurisdiction.

The group will also ask the company, M&J Wallace Ltd, to authorise the Revenue Commissioners to correspond with the committee on the same matters.

The statement said the committee hopes "to meet next week to consider the replies."

Last week, Deputy Wallace admitted that his company under-declared VAT and came to a €2.1m settlement with the Revenue Commissioners.

However, he has said the €2.1m is unlikely to be paid.

Earlier, Taoiseach Enda Kenny said that the Government would make a decision on allowing a Dáil debate very shortly.

He was speaking after Deputy Wallace apologised to the Ceann Comhairle for what he said was his lack of understanding of Standing Orders.

Mr Wallace said he had requested speaking time under the wrong section and asked whether he could apply again under another.

Ceann Comhairle Seán Barrett said it was open to the Government to allow a debate in its own time, but suggested the matter rest until after the Members' Interests Committee met.
