There was a 5% increase in the number of complaints against registered doctors last year.
In its annual report, the Medical Council said that as a result of these complaints eight doctors had lost their right to practice in Ireland.
The council received 367 new complaints against its members last year, 39 of which were referred to the Fitness to Practise Committee for inquiry.
37 cases were heard and following the conclusion of these inquiries, the eight doctors had their registration cancelled.
Conditions were imposed on six others and 15 were sanctioned in relation to their professional practice or poor professional performance.
Meanwhile, the Medical Council's online ''Check the Register'' facility was accessed over 200,000 times in 2011 by users verifying the qualifications and good standing of doctors.
