The 50th International Eucharistic Congress will take place in Dublin on 10 - 17 June.

Organisers are estimating that up 25,000 people will take part daily in events throughout the week, with over 17,000 pilgrims from around the world also expected to attend.

The week begins with an opening ceremony on Sunday 10 June at the RDS, where mass will be celebrated by the Papal Legate, Cardinal Marc Ouellet.

A full programme of events and activities has been scheduled for the week, including workshops, discussion groups and testimonies.

Tours, exhibitions, youth events and a Eucharistic Procession will also feature before the final closing ceremony in Croke Park on Sunday 17 June, where over 80,000 people are expected.

The Congress theme is “The Eucharist: Communion with Christ and With One Another”, which has its roots in the document “Lumen Gentium” of the Second Vatican Council.

Significantly, 2012 is also the 50th anniversary of the opening of the Council.

In March, Pope Benedict blessed the Congress Bell, which was taken on pilgrimage around Ireland by teams of volunteers before being brought to Rome.

The Bell was presented by a delegation headed by Congress President Archbishop Diarmuid Martin and IEC2012 Secretary General Fr Kevin Doran along with members of IEC2012 staff.

Three patron saints were approved for nomination for the Congress by Dr Martin – St Columbanus, St Mary MacKillop and Blessed Margaret Ball.

A special hymn for the 50th Congress – Though We Are Many- was composed by Bernard Sexton and the Congress Logo –People in Communion - was designed by Martin Barlow from Portadown, Co Armagh, who also designed two Congress stamps for An Post.

The last Congress was held in Quebec, Canada in 2008 and before that in Guadalajara, Mexico in 2004.

During his message to the 2008 Congress, Pope Benedict announced that Dublin would host the 50th Eucharistic Congress.

Dublin last hosted the Eucharistic Congress in 1932.

Over a million people attended the closing ceremony in the Phoenix Park which was presided over by Papal Legate Cardinal Lorenzo Lauri.
