Group to report to James Reilly on children's hospital options

The independent review group set up to recommend options for the location of the new National Children's Hospital is expected to report to Health Minister James Reilly by the end of the week.

The group, chaired by Dr Frank Dolphin, sought more time due to the volume of proposals it received.

Around 40 sites have been proposed or submitted to the Independent Review Group, which is to advise the Government.

Today, Connolly Hospital Blanchardstown formally launched its bid to be the location for the hospital.

The Health Service Executive facility is offering a large parkland site on campus near the M50 and says the hospital can be built by October 2016 for around €424m.

Also today, the Mater-Rotunda-Temple Street group supporting the Mater location has revised its costings.

It says the hospital and the new maternity facility can be built at a net cost to the Government of €477m.

Major proposals have also been submitted by St James's Hospital, the Coombe hospital and Tallaght hospital.

The report of the review group will go to Cabinet, which will make the final decision on location.
