Political parties reveal lowest-ever disclosed donations

Political parties disclosed donations worth €30,997 for last year, the lowest figure since a law requiring disclosure was introduced in 1997.

Figures released by the Standards in Public Office Commission show only three political parties – the Socialist Party, Sinn Féin and Fianna Fáil - disclosed any donations in 2011.

A total of €12,649 in donations was disclosed by the Socialist Party, Sinn Féin disclosed €12,000 and Fianna Fáil disclosed €6,348.

The total figure of €30,997 in donations is the lowest figure ever reported, despite the fact that last year was a general election year.

Only donations over €5,078.95 in value received by parties are required to be disclosed.

In a statement, the commission said it would also be referring a file to the gardaí over the Communist Party of Ireland’s failure to furnish a statutory declaration.

Meanwhile, the commission revealed that political parties received a total of €12,664,793 in State funding for 2011.
