Unions at Bord na Móna have called a day of strike action for next Tuesday after workers at the peat company turned down a new offer on pay.
Last month, the Bord na Móna group of unions had recommended acceptance of a new offer.
It would have included a wage increase of 1.7%, a once-off payment of €1,000, and the prospect of a second wage increase based on productivity.
In a ballot the majority of the 2,000 workers at the company based in Longford, Westmeath, Laois, Offaly and Kildare decided to reject that deal.
Group Secretary of the Bord na Móna trade unions Oliver McDonagh said his members were reluctant to accept performance-related pay elements in the deal.
He said another issue with the pay deal on offer was the fact that the money was not pensionable.
In a statement this morning, Bord na Móna management said it is disappointed by the decision because the agreement with the unions represented a fair and reasonable accommodation of the interests of all parties.
