The cost of prescription medicines is to fall at 65 pharmacies operated by Boots Ireland.

The ten most expensive prescription medicines will be reduced in price, with an average saving of 25%.

The new prices will come into effect from Friday 1 June.

People living with chronic conditions such as asthma or cardiovascular disease and who are not eligible for the GMS Medical Card scheme will benefit most, with potential savings of up to €300 a year.

The Consumers' Association of Ireland has welcomed the move.

Irish Pharmacy Union President Rory O'Donnell said the move underlined the competitive nature of the sector.
