A fire that destroyed the Top of Coom pub on the Cork/Kerry border is being investigated by gardaí.

The fire broke out at about 9pm last night and quickly spread to the adjoining family home.

The publican and an elderly customer were in the pub when the fire broke out, but escaped to safety.

The publican’s wife and children also escaped.

Three units of the Kerry County Fire Service fought the blaze until 5am but the pub and home were extensively damaged in the fire.

Gardaí are not treating the fire as suspicious and are investigating if an open fire in the pub may have contributed to the blaze.
