Extra security checks and screening for passengers in transit likely at Dublin Airport

The new security procedures imposed on flights departing from Dublin Airport may see extra security checks and screening for passengers in transit.

National Civil Aviation Security Committee chairman John Fearon confirmed the impact on airlines' operations this afternoon.

The European Commission yesterday imposed additional security procedures on aircraft travelling from Dublin Airport to other EU airports.

Speaking after a meeting with the airlines to discuss the security problems, Mr Fearon said the nature of the problems had to remain confidential in the interest of national security.

But he said those involved fully understood the issues. He said that interim measures have been put in place to rectify the problem.

It is hoped the issue will be resolved within two months, however the delay will be in getting ultimate approval from the European Commission.

He said there was no need for fear and stressed that security at Dublin Airport was robust.

Today's move follows what the European Commission described as the Dublin Airport Authority's failure to deal quickly enough with security deficiencies that were identified by an audit.
