International water and climate conference opens in Dublin

A six-day conference on water, climate and energy begins in Dublin today.

Delegates from over 60 countries will debate the issues impacting on all aspects of climate change.

Former President of Ireland Mary Robinson will be among the speakers at the conference, which was opened today by Fine Gael MEP Mairead McGuinness.

The event is organised by the International Water Association, which represents water industry professionals.

Water treatment technologies, water resource management and waste-water and energy are among the topics that will be discussed.

Organisers said the agenda will have a particular resonance with Irish delegates, given the recent debate on domestic water charges, septic tanks and the controversial gas extraction method known as fracking.
