Former Vita Cortex workers staying put until redundancy payments are paid

Former workers at the Vita Cortex plant in Cork say their sit-in will continue until they receive outstanding redundancy payments.

They voted yesterday evening to accept proposals from the company's owner to resolve the dispute.

But the former workers say the sit-in, which started four-and-a-half months ago, will go on until the money is paid into their accounts.

The proposal to end the dispute was agreed in the first face-to-face negotiations between the company's owner, Jack Ronan, and the union representing the majority of the workers, SIPTU.

Taoiseach Enda Kenny has welcomed the development, and has praised the workers for their enormous "dignity and fortitude".

He recalled that he had said in the Dáil this week that they deserved respect for their long years of diligent service.

"I was deeply impressed by their determination and sincerity when I met them eight weeks ago and I wish them all the best in the future now that their long campaign has come to an end," Mr Kenny said in a statement.
