Only €600,000 has been paid out of a €10m humanitarian assistance fund for those affected by last October's serious flooding.

A spokesperson for the Department of Social Protection admitted that it was "unlikely" that the full €10m would be paid out.

Many of those affected are still not back in their homes.

The Government put the aid scheme in place to assist households affected in the aftermath of the flooding.

The scheme was designed to help those who had no insurance or who had inadequate cover.

So far just €603,000 has been paid out to 889 people.

The Department of Social Protection said these were mostly emergency payments for food, clothing, fuel and household goods.

A further 25 larger claims are pending, with a total estimated value of €240,000.

These claims are for larger sums, such as building works, and longer-term requirements to repair homes and make them habitable again.

In a statement to RTÉ News, the Department of Social Protection said these claims take longer to process as homeowners must first establish the cost of repair and engage a builder to carry out the repairs.

But these figures show that more than €9m of the €10m allocated has been neither paid out nor applied for.

This is despite reports from residents’ associations and local councillors that homeowners are experiencing financial difficulties when it comes to restoring their homes.

A spokesperson for the Department encouraged anyone who thought they might qualify for funding to contact it straight away.
