Householders who are unable to obtain weather related flood insurance cover should get in touch with the Office of Public Works.
The minister with responsibility for the OPW, Brian Hayes, told the Dáil this afternoon that it would not be acceptable for the insurance industry to refuse cover in areas where there has been government investment in flood defences.
He said he had made this clear to the general insurance industry.
Mr Hayes urged the public to get in touch with him if they cannot get insurance where flood defences have been built.
He said umbrella-body the Irish Insurance Federation said there was not a huge demand for insurance because people were not coming forward to look for it.
He said he needed the information to strengthen his hand in agreeing principles with regard to cover with insurers.
