The Irish Dental Association has said that 12 cases of mouth cancer were detected as a result of last year's mouth cancer awareness day.
An estimated 10,000 people availed of free mouth cancer examinations during the campaign.
The free checks were provided by 700 dentists around the country and at the Cork and Dublin dental hospitals in late September.
As a result of the examinations, 83 people were referred for urgent examinations. There were 12 confirmed cases of mouth cancer.
