An original copy of the 1916 Proclamation of the Irish Republic has sold at auction in Dublin this evening for €124,000.
The document, of which its thought around 50 copies survived, had been expected to achieve between €60,000 and €80,000 at the political, literary and military history auction and James Adam & Sons Auctioneers.
It was bought by a private buyer and is expected to remain in the country.
Another series of lots, consisting of a series of documents dating from the 13th century relating to the Wyse family in Waterford, was bought prior to the auction on behalf of a new medieval museum due to open in the city later this year.
The sale price has not been disclosed, but the guide price was €100,000 to €150,000.
Because of their age and rarity, the documents were considered to be particularly unusual and important.
