VHI Healthcare has recouped €7m over invoice errors

VHI Healthcare says it has recouped nearly €7m that was wrongly invoiced for accommodation, cancelled procedures, wrong lengths of stay and other mistakes in 2011.

The amount is just over 0.5% of the €1.235bn paid out in claims in 2011.

Mistakes occurred where a patient was billed for a private room when the patient occupied a semi-private room, private fees for patients treated publicly and wrong invoicing for certain drugs, tests and devices.

VHI says that customers should contact the insurer if there is a mistake on their statement, or if VHI has been charged for accommodation or treatments not received.

The company received 2,000 contacts from customers last year questioning their claims assessments and in 44% of the cases reported the full money paid out was due for recovery.
