Politicians received donations of €378,920 in 2011

New figures reveal members of the Oireachtas and MEPs received political donations with a total value of €378,920 last year.

The figures were published this afternoon by the Standards in Public Office Commission.

Excluding previously declared donations to Presidential election candidates and current Senators who were unsuccessful in the General Election, politicians received donations totalling €199,291.

Under the legislation donations valued at more than €634 must be disclosed and 284 members of the Dáil, Seanad and European Parliament filed donation statements as required.

However, former Senator Eoghan Harris failed to make a return, although he has undertaken to supply the required statement to the commission.

As previously disclosed, successful Presidential election candidate Michael D Higgins was the biggest single recipient of donations last year, receiving €121,421.

The next biggest recipient was Independent Senator Rónán Mullen, who received €18,277.

He was followed by Independent Senator David Norris (€17,929 - the amount he previously declared for the Presidential election) and Independent TD for Wicklow Stephen Donnelly (€11,652).

Collectively, Labour representatives received more donations than any other party's representatives.

Excluding Mr Higgins’ donations, 27 other Labour representatives received over €83,000 between them.

This was compared to €56,262 received by Fine Gael representatives, €32,860 received by Fianna Fáil representatives and €8,800 received by Sinn Féin representatives.

In total Independents, (including Mr Norris' previously disclosed donations) got more than €72,000.

The figures do not include money received and already declared by unsuccessful candidates in the General Election, because the Commission told them they did not need to furnish another donation statement.
