Call for report on HSA credit card spending

The Secretary General of the Department of Jobs, Enterprise and Innovation has been urged to bring forward a report on the level of credit card spending in the Health and Safety Authority over the last decade.

John Murphy revealed that €625,000 had been spent on credit cards between 2005 and 2011.

Mr Murphy said that between €20,000 and €25,000 of that required "further explanation".

The Chairman of the Public Accounts Committee said he was taken aback by the level of spending on travel and entertainment in that period.

John McGuinness said he was baffled that the department did not conduct a review when it was made aware the extent of the spending through Freedom of Information requests from a member of the public last year.

Mr McGuinness said a response had been requested from the department then, but it had not been forthcoming.

Mr Murphy said the HSA Chief Executive had been asked to make himself available to the Public Accounts Committee.

Mr McGuinness said the department would be invited back to the committee as soon as a report is completed.
