€4.5m in waste charges not yet billed

Many householders are unaware of outstanding charges

The majority of households in Dublin still owe money to Dublin City Council for collecting their bins because of a delay in issuing bills for the final quarter of last year.

€4.5 million is owed by households for collections carried out before Greyhound Recycling and Recovery took over the service.

Local representatives have criticised the delay, saying many householders will not be aware that they owe money to the council.

Greyhound Recycling and Recovery took over the collection of household bins from Dublin City Council in January.

As part of the deal they also became responsible for collecting any money owed by customers to the council.

But three months after the handover bills have still not been issued to householders for the last quarter of 2011.

A delay in passing over customers’ information to Greyhound because of data protection concerns has caused the hold-up.

Dublin City Council now says the bills will be issued in the coming weeks.
