Fishermen's representatives have welcomed the mackerel quota for the Irish fishing fleet for 2012.
Ireland's share of this year's mackerel quota will be in the region of 67,000 tonnes, down only marginally on last year's allocation.
But the Federation of Irish Fishermen has raised concerns about the future impact of Icelandic and Faroese decisions to increase their quotas without international agreement.
In recent years both Iceland and the Faroe Islands have increased their quotas from virtually nil to over 150,000 tonnes.
Marine Minister Simon Coveney has criticised Iceland and the Faroes for what he called their total disregard of responsible management of the stock.
In advance of EU Fisheries Council meeting next week, fishermen's representatives have asked the minister to seek EU sanctions against both Iceland and the Faroe Islands.
They have also asked the minister to highlight at that meeting what they see as "unjustifiable actions by some member states".
The FIF alleges that some states are allowing their flags to be used by vessels that are involved in the overfishing of stocks.
The issues are expected to be discussed at next week's EU council meeting.
