Bord na Móna workers vote for action

Workers at Bord na Móna have voted this evening in favour of industrial action in a dispute over a pay increase.

Unions representing almost 2,000 employees at the company say they want it to honour a national pay agreement made in 2008.

Of the 1,000 workers who voted, 85% were in favour of strike action.

Unions claim workers are due a 3.5% pay increase for three years under the Towards 2016 Social Partnership deal.

Workers say ESB staff based alongside them in the Midlands have already been paid the increase, but Bord na Móna management have said funding this would necessitate spending cuts elsewhere and put jobs at risk.

The company has already offered an upfront payment of €800 per employee and a 3% per annum potential increase in income.

However, after severe criticism of the failure to honour the pay increase at a meeting of staff before Christmas and unsuccessful talks with management, the unions balloted the workers over the last three weeks.
