The death has occurred in Limerick of Jack Bourke, who was a member of Limerick City Council for almost 40 years and served as Mayor of the city three times.

A native of Whitehall in Dublin, Mr Bourke went to Limerick in 1953 to run the City Theatre for his father Lorcan, who was heavily involved in theatre and cinema management in Dublin.

Mr Bourke, who lived at Roxboro road in Limerick, was first elected to Limerick City Council in 1967, and served as Mayor of the city in 1968, 1986, and 1999.

He also served for many years as Chairman of the original Mid Western Health Board from the years 1982 to 2000.

He died at Milford hospice after a long illness. He is survived by his four adult children Declan, Deirdre, Niall and Orla.
