An independent investigation is to be held into the pseudomonas outbreaks that claimed the lives of four children at two hospitals in Northern Ireland in the past two months.

An interim report is expected by March.

One child died from the infection at Altnagelvin Hospital in Co Derry in December.

Three other babies died at the Royal Jubilee Maternity Hospital in Belfast earlier this month.

Gavin Burke and Caoimhe Campbell, the parents of 10-day-old Caolan, who died in Altnagelvin Hospital, had earlier called for a public inquiry.

Northern Ireland Health Minister Edwin Poots stopped short of announcing a full inquiry.

However, he said the Regulation and Quality Improvement Authority would carry out an independent investigation.

The health authorities have been asked if enough was done to warn other hospitals about the outbreak of the infection at Altnagelvin.

Water taps were identified as being the source of the infection at both hospitals.

There have been no new cases of pseudomonas in the past week.
