The death has occurred of Pearse Cahill, one of the pioneering figures in Irish aviation.

Mr Cahill, who was 95, operated Iona Airways, which provided charter services and briefly operated some scheduled routes in the 1980s.

Iona Airways was established by Mr Cahill's father Hugh in the 1930s.

It pre-dated Aer Lingus and initially operated from an airfield in Finglas in Dublin.
