The funeral of Eithne Kenny, mother of Taoiseach Enda Kenny, has taken place in Co Mayo.

Requiem Mass was celebrated at the Church of The Holy Rosary in Castlebar and burial took place this afternoon at Islandeady Cemetery.

Mrs Kenny is survived by Enda Kenny and his siblings John, Henry, Kieran and Marie.

She was actively involved in Mayo political life for more than 60 years.

In his homily, Fr Pat Donnellan described Mrs Kenny as a "dignified and gracious lady of deep faith who gave generously to all of her many gifts".

He said she was as "proud as punch" that God blessed her with a son who became Taoiseach of the country.

Former President Mrs Mary McAleese and her husband Martin were among those offering their condolences to the Kenny family.

President Michael D Higgins led mourners at the removal of Mrs Kenny's remains to the church last night.

Senior Government ministers, TDs and representatives of community organisations were among the thousands that attended the funeral.

Northern Secretary Owen Paterson and British Ambassador to Ireland Julian King also attended.

The British-Irish Council Summit, which was due to take place in Dublin today, was postponed as a mark of respect.

The first official visit to Ireland by British Deputy Prime Minister Nick Clegg was also been postponed.
