Dublin Circuit Criminal Court sentences a woman to four years in jail

A 39-year-old woman has been given a four-year prison sentence for the sexual exploitation of a 15-year-old girl.

Ramilekun Thomas, originally from Nigeria but with an address in Fort Lawn Park in Blanchardstown, pleaded guilty to two counts of using a child for the purposes of sexual exploitation in May 2008.

The schoolgirl was a friend of an acquaintance of Ms Thomas.

The Dublin Circuit Criminal Court heard that on at least six occasions the girl had sex with a 60-year-old man in his home or in Ms Thomas' home.

She was paid €50 on five occasions and €100 on one occasion.

Most of the money went to Ms Thomas. The girl was given only €10 in total.

The court heard Ms Thomas has three children. She told the court she had problems with drugs and alcohol and she had given sexual favours to the same man to feed her habits.

Judge Pat McCartan said he was satisfied she knew the age of the schoolgirl and knew it was not proper in any circumstances to abuse her in this way.

He said because of the age of the girl, because of the fact that Ms Thomas was a mother herself and because of the nature of the offences he had to impose an immediate prison sentence.

He sentenced her to four years in prison but suspended the last two to give her some hope of rehabilitation.

However, he said there had to be a punitive element to the sentence as a lesson to herself and to anyone else who might be minded to engage in this type of activity.

Ms Thomas will be registered as a sex offender.
