Belfast hosted the MTV Europe Music Awards for the very first time tonight.

The Northern Ireland Tourist Board says the event will generate at least £10m (€11.6m) for the local economy.

Around 10,000 hotel rooms were booked by MTV executives.

Restaurants, bars and clubs were also given a much-needed financial boost as thousands of people visited Belfast for the event.

Belfast City Manager Andrew Irvine said it was an opportunity to change international perceptions about the city.

For the first time in the event's history, the awards were held in three different locations in the one city.

Lady Gaga and Bruno Mars joined Coldplay, Jessie J and LMFAO for performances at the Odyssey Arena.

The Red Hot Chili Peppers played at the Ulster Hall, while Snow Patrol and Jason Derulo were on stage at City Hall.

The event was broadcast live from the Odyssey Arena to an estimated 1.2bn viewers around the world.
