The funeral mass of Garda Ciaran Jones has taken place in Manor Kilbride, Co Wicklow.

The 24-year-old died when he was swept away while trying to warn motorists of danger during Monday night's floods.

Taoiseach Enda Kenny, Minister for Justice Alan Shatter and Garda Commissioner Martin Callinan were among the 700 mourners in attendance at St Brigid's church.

Large numbers of gardaí formed a guard of honour from the church to the cemetery.

Delivering the homily, Fr Padraig Mc Dermott, described Garda Jones as "the life and soul of the community".

Garda Jones' girlfriend Clare Kennedy spoke at the end of the mass, describing how they had met as teenagers.

President Mary McAleese was among those who attended the removal service yesterday evening.

Garda Jones is survived by his parents, younger brother and sister, and girlfriend.

Meanwhile, friends and colleagues of Celia de Jesus, the Filipino nurse who died in the floods in Dublin, gathered last night at the chapel of Our Lady's Hospice at Harold's Cross to remember her.
