The body of a man has been taken from the River Shannon south of Banagher near the site of the former Green Isle food plant at Meelick.

A local man, who had been on a jet-ski, discovered the remains.

The body was recovered from the water by the Mallow Sub-Aqua Unit.

The man has yet to be identified.

Garda and naval crews, assisted by sub-aqua units from the local Shannonside club, Athlone, Loughrea and Carrick-on-Suir, and river rescue units from Louth and Wexford, had been involved in an ongoing search for a 24-year-old man from Five Alley in Birr.

He was last seen in the Banagher area in the early hours of Monday 17 October.
