A search and rescue operation is under way in Co Wicklow after an off-duty Garda was swept away in floods near Blessington.

It is thought that 25-year-old Ciaran Jones - from Manor Kilbride in Co Wicklow - was swept away in a flood after attempting to divert traffic away from a dangerous bridge at about 7pm.

The Garda Helicopter, Coast Guard and several mountain rescue teams are involved in the operation.

Many of the Garda's colleagues are also involved in the operation, which will continue throughout the night.

The bridge at Ballysmuttan was newly-built in recent years, but previously the bridge located at that point had been washed away in floods.

Gardaí say some other bridges in the locality have been severely damaged in floods tonight.

A large number of volunteers are expected to assist with the search from first light.
