The Catholic Church is to invite primary schools under its patronage to evaluate their Catholic ethos and identity over the current school year.

The church has said that during this process some schools may conclude that the Catholic ethos is not of great significance to them.

Publishing the results of discussions with parents and schools on the patronage issue, the Catholic Schools Partnership said it would be happy to work with those schools if they wished to change patron.

The CSP added that while the issue of patronage had to be addressed, it was important not to hype up its importance.
