The World Conker Championships, which was due to be staged this weekend in Northhamptonshire, has been cancelled due to high winds.

A message on the official website of the championships, said it had proved impossible to set up the conker playing area and marquees due to the winds.

It would, they said, be "simply too dangerous" to proceed.

First held in 1965, the World Conker Championships has raised more than £400,000 for charity.

Competitors play on eight white podiums and go through rounds until the winner emerges and is led to the Conker Throne and crowned with conkers.

Irish aficionados of the nut and twine should note the Irish Conker Championships take place in Freshford, Co Kilkenny on 30 October.

For those who cannot wait that long, the "Conkers Bonkers" Airfield Autumn Festival takes place this weekend in Dublin.
