The Minister for Finance has said he is prepared to put up to €1bn into credit unions to recapitalise them.
Speaking in the Seanad, Michael Noonan said he seriously intended sorting out the credit unions but that he would not do it in one "big bang".
He said his advice was that it would cost between half €500m and €1bn.
The recapitalisation of the banks, he said, had cost less than expected and the Government had the resources to spend what was left over on credit unions.
