Carl Zeiss has announced it is to end manufacturing activites in Wexford with the potential loss of 82 jobs.
Carl Zeiss makes lenses for spectacles. It is based at the White Mill Industrial Estate just outside the town.
The job losses are to be on a phased basis with manufacturing ceasing by year’s end.
Around 100 people are employed at the Wexford facility.
20 staff will be kept on for sales and technical support for Carl Zeiss operations across Europe.
The company will now enter a 30-day consultation period with affected employees and their representatives.
Carl Zeiss has been in Wexford for the last 30 years.
On its website, the firm says the fiscal year 2009/10 was the most successful year ever in the company’s history.
