One in three maths teachers underqualified

Failure rates in maths have been on the rise

One third of second-level maths teachers are not fully qualified to teach the subject, according to the final results of a survey carried out by the Teaching Council.

400 schools - 60% of secondary schools - responded to the survey, which was carried out as concerns were raised about the level of teacher qualification in the subject.

The survey found that just 2.5% of maths teachers have no direct qualification in the subject.

However, 66% of maths teachers are fully qualified, which means that in most cases maths comprised 30% or more of their third level degree studies.

A further 31% of maths teachers have studied maths for at least one year of their undergraduate degree.

These findings were released by Minister of State for Research and Innovation, Sean Sherlock.

He said he hoped a forthcoming training programme would lead to a situation where all maths teachers had a qualification in the subject.
