130 jobs have been lost in various Gaeltacht regions following the closure of Meitheal Forbartha na Gaeltachta - a partnership company involved in implementing various rural and Gaeltacht schemes and grants.

It is understood that a decision was taken by the board of MFG to terminate the company due to high levels of overspending and debt in the company.

Sinn Féin Senator Trevor Ó Clochartaigh said that the board should accept responsibility for the company's closure, as it was evident, he said, that a close eye was not being kept on MFG operations.

Mr Ó Clochartaigh is seeking an investigation into the board's role in the closure.

Staff say they first heard the news on radio, and have yet to receive written confirmation of the decision to terminate their employment.

MFG was operating in seven Gaeltacht regions.

25 jobs to go at Culleton Insurances

Meanwhile, an insurance company in the southeast is due to lay off staff with the closure of seven offices.

Culleton Insurances, one of the largest independent insurance brokers in Ireland, is closing seven of its eight sales outlets with the sale of its retail business to 123.ie.

The branches closing are Waterford, Carlow, Kilkenny, Athy, Gorey, New Ross and Enniscorthy.

It is expected there will be at least 25 redundancies.
