Presidential candidate Michael D Higgins said that the convention of the Constitution should look at the role of the Presidency and the manner in which a person can go forward.
Speaking in Galway, Mr Higgins said that it has been difficult to get his manifesto across while there was a concentration on who was taking part.
He added that it was an example of the shallowness of our society.
200 people attended the event at Galway City Hall, which was organised by Galway Arts Group.
