Beaumont Hospital in Dublin says it expects to perform a record number of kidney transplants this year.

According to its National Renal Transplantation team, 111 kidney transplants were performed during the first half of the year, compared with 121 for all of last year.

The previous record was 172 kidney transplants in 2009.

Clinical Director of Nephrology, Urology and Transplantation Professor Peter Conlon said there were several reasons behind the rise in kidney transplants.

Professor Conlon pointed to more living-related donors, the appointment of two more renal transplant surgeons and greater public understanding of the benefits of donation.

He also said acute hospitals have increased their efforts to identify and support potential donor families after the deaths of their loved ones.

Professor Jim Egan, the head of the National Transplant Office, has also reported an increase in deceased organ donations for heart, lung, liver, kidney and pancreas transplants.

There were 50 deceased organ donations for the first half of the year, compared with 58 last year.

Beaumont Hospital has produced new videos and booklets to inform the public on what kidney transplantation involves and the benefits and risks.
