There is continued uncertainty over the future of Bank of America's MBNA credit card operation in Carrick-on-Shannon, Co Leitrim, with the company undecided on whether it will sell or wind down the firm.

In a statement this afternoon, Bank of America said it will seek to bring certainty to employees by identifying a 'appropriate solution' as quickly as possible.'

According to the statement, the ultimate decision taken will be based on what is in the best interests of shareholders, employees, customers and partners.

Bank of America announced last night that it was withdrawing from its credit card businesses in both Ireland and the UK.

MBNA employs up to 1,000 people in Carrick-on-Shannon.

Fine Gael TD for Roscommon/South Leitrim Frank Feighan said if a buyer can be found for the business the jobs must stay in Carrick-on-Shannon.

Carrick-on-Shannon Chamber of Commerce President Gerry Faughnan said the company was leaving behind a substantial skilled, cost effective and diverse workforce that was ready and willing to work with a new investor.

Bank of America also employs 700 people at two other sites in Dublin, but the announcement does not affect them.

In a statement last night, Minister for Jobs, Enterprise and Innovation Richard Bruton said he had directed the IDA to work closely with the company to assist them in finding a buyer for the business as a going concern.
