One of the country's biggest construction companies, Bowen Construction, has gone into liquidation.
The Cork-based company has been involved in a large range of projects, including the Luas extension to Cherrywood in Co Dublin, motorway extensions and commercial and factory buildings.
It employed between 60 and 70 people.
The Construction Industry Federation said this evening that the liquidation was another blow for the entire construction industry.
A spokesman said: ‘This is yet another severe blow for the entire construction industry and surely it is time for Government and the Department of Enterprise to work with the sector to safeguard remaining employment and to enable the sector play its role in economic recovery.’
