At least 120 people have staged a protest outside Tallaght Hospital in Dublin this afternoon.

The demonstration was organised by the Tallaght Hospital Action Group in solidarity with staff at the hospital.

The group says the hospital is seriously under-resourced and operating over capacity.

They say the budget for the hospital is designed to cater for 350,000 people, but it now caters for a catchment area which has more than 500,000 people.

Earlier this week, the Health Information and Quality Authority said it continued to be concerned about patient care at Tallaght's Emergency Department.

Figures released for last year show Tallaght Hospital has fewer consultants than Beaumont, St James's Hospital, the Mater Misericordiae University Hospital, and St Vincent's Hospital but that it had the highest inpatient discharges and attendances to its Emergency Department.

Tallaght had 100 consultants in 2010, compared to 154 in St James's Hospital.

A meeting which was scheduled to take place yesterday between the group and the Minister for Health Dr James Reilly has now been postponed until Tuesday next.
