A man is being questioned following the discovery of an elderly man's body in the psychiatric unit of Cavan General Hospital.
The body of the 82-year-old man was found at around 7am this morning.
Gardaí arrested a man in his mid-40s at the scene.
He is still being questioned in Cavan Garda Station.
The Health Service Executive said it had informed the Mental Health Commission of the death and said it was providing support to other patients, their families and staff.
The HSE also said it would be conducting its own investigation and is co-operating with gardaí following the ‘unexpected death.’
The remains of the man were taken to the Louth County Hospital in Dundalk where State Pathologist Dr Marie Cassidy is to perform a post mortem later today.
It is expected that after she has confirmed the cause of death, this will formally become a murder investigation.
