A secondary school principal in Co Kerry has described this year's Leaving Certificate Project Maths examination as a devastating blow to the teaching of mathematics.

Speaking on RTÉ Raidió na Gaeltachta’s Adhmhaidin, principal of Pobalscoil Chorca Dhuibhne Pádraig Firtéar said he has written to Minister of Education Ruairi Quinn outlining his concerns.

Pobalscoil Chorca Dhuibhne is one of the 24 schools chosen to partake in the pilot phase of Project Maths.

Mr Firtéar said the examination papers were so difficult he feels students have been let down and that the image of maths has been damaged.

He is also concerned about the adverse effect that this experience will have had on students while sitting their other exams.

Mr Firtéar said questions have to be answered about the drafting of the exam.
