The Irish Turf Cutters and Contractors Association has insisted that all work ceased on protected bogs on 1 June, in accordance with an EU directive.

The comments follow a threat of legal action against the Irish Government amidst claims that illegal turf cutting is continuing.

Speaking at his bog outside Castlerea, Co Roscommon, today, Independent Deputy Luke Ming Flanagan said he had spoken to all of the contractors today and they confirmed that no further turf cutting had taken place in all 31 protected bogs.

He said negotiations were continuing alongside the Peatlands Council to resolve the ongoing issues surrounding the rights of turf cutters.

The association’s Michael Fitzmaurice said its members were open to relocation and compensation and that every effort was being made to reach a compromise.

He said Europe's hard-handed approach was causing resentment in the rural community in the west.

However the EU has given the Irish Government a month to indicate what action has been taken on the ground to ensure the future protection of these bogs. Otherwise, Ireland is under threat of court action in Europe.
