Yemen's Ali Abdullah Saleh is recovering in a Saudi hospital from shrapnel wounds sustained in Friday's attack on the presidential palace.

The opposition has hailed his departure and thousands celebrated the news, however his party insists he is still president.

President Saleh was wounded in an explosion as he and other senior officials prayed last Friday at a mosque inside the presidential compound.

He is convalescing in Riyadh after undergoing two successful operations.

A Saudi official said afterwards that the president would return to Yemen after two weeks.

In an audio statement broadcast on state television late on Friday, President Saleh blamed the attack on dissident tribal chief Sheikh Sadiq al-Ahmar, whose fighters have been battling government forces since a power transfer deal collapsed last month.

But the powerful tribal chieftain denied any involvement in the attack.
