US cadets boosting interest in maths, science

A unique partnership is under way between the Westpoint Military academy in the United States and the University of Limerick, which aims to get children to learn to like maths and science subjects.

Hundreds of children at schools in Limerick are being visited by an elite team of engineering cadets and teachers from the military college.

Through a number of fun exercises, such as bridge building, cadets are reinvigorating an interest in maths and science.

The programme was initiated by the science and engineering department of the University of Limerick.

It is seeking to address the critically low numbers of people studying maths and science subjects, which are vital for the Irish economy and jobs growth.
