Government Chief Whip Paul Kehoe has said that reforms of the Dáil will be put in place by the time the House returns after a shorter than usual summer holiday.

He said there will be Friday sittings to deal with the final stages of legislation, known as the Committee Stage and Report Stage of Bills.

The main Dáil Chamber will also be given over on some Fridays to committees.

And there is to be an investigations, oversight and petitions committee.

As promised in the Programme for Government, the Constitution is to be amended to deal with the Abbeylara judgment, which currently prevents committees from blaming any one person for wrongdoing.

Question Time in the House is also to be changed with more time allowed, but TDs will only be allowed ask one oral question.

The Ceann Comhairle is to be given the right to decide if ministers have given reasonable information in their replies.

Fianna Fáil's Seán Ó Fearghaíl said his party supported Dáil reform, although they had concerns about some of the Government's proposals.

He said that any Friday sittings of the Dáil should conduct real and meaningful business, so there had to be Leaders' Questions - where party leaders challenge the Taoiseach on urgent issues of the day - as well as Ministers' Questions.
