Áras an Uachtaráin - Labour councillors free to nominate candidates

Labour has confirmed that the party's local authority members are free to nominate or vote for any Presidential candidate in their local authorities.

The subject was discussed at this afternoon's meeting of the Parliamentary Labour Party.

It was confirmed that directions will not be given to the party's councillors.

This decision will make it easier for independent candidates seeking a nomination from four local authorities in order to enter the Presidential contest.

Labour will chose its own candidate at a selection convention on 19 June.
