Taoiseach Enda Kenny has chosen Dr Martin McAleese as one of his nominees for the Seanad.
The President's husband was included on a list of 11 nominees announced by Mr Kenny this evening.
Other notable names on the list include former athlete Eamonn Coughlan, human rights activitst Katherine Zappone and Director of the Abbey Theatre Fiach MacConghail.
Also on the list are Louth Councillor Jim Darcy, the Chairperson of Threshold Aideen Hayden, barrister Lorraine Higgins, teacher Mary Moran, the founder of the Jack and Jill Foundation Mary Ann O'Brien, educationalist Mary Louise O'Donnell and Jillian van Turnhout of the Children's Rights Alliance.
Ms Zappone, Ms Hayden, Ms Higgins and Ms Moran were recomended by Labour leader and Tánaiste Eamon Gilmore.
Mr McAleese said he was 'pleased and honoured' to be nominated as a Senator.
'I greatly look forward to serving as an independent member of the Seanad,' he said.
'I will not be affiliated with any particular party or grouping and will focus on issues which affect the practical interests of the people of Ireland, especially in regard to economic regeneration and employment.
'I will also continue, as best I can, to contribute to political harmony and reconciliation on this island.'
Dr McAleese said he will continue to support the President in her duties and will not take a salary until she leaves office later this year.
The Seanad will sit next Wednesday 25 May at 2.30pm.
